DAVID EBNER

PIANIST-PHILOSOPHER-HUMANIST

Biography

David grew up hearing stories about the mission of Daniel Barenboim and literary scholar Edward Said to promote intercultural dialogue across the Middle East. He was fascinated by how their West-Eastern Divan Orchestra brought together different cultures, art forms, and scholarly disciplines. The commitment to humanism that inspired this endeavour left a profound impression on David and became a guiding principle for his career as a pianist and philosopher.

Trained by Maria João Pires from the age of eleven, David has performed at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, London’s Fidelio Café, and Vienna’s Ehrbar Palace, whilst completing studies in music, philosophy, and politics at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the University of Oxford, and the University of Cambridge. He has collaborated with the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic Orchestra on a concert series, performed chamber music with artists like cellist Thomas Carroll, and offered lecture recitals at the Queen’s College, Oxford. David is fluent in five modern languages and reads ancient Greek and Latin.

During lockdown, David performed online for people with mental health difficulties and contributed to an international fundraising festival for the WHO. He furthermore debated the impact of the pandemic on art with conductor Antonello Manacorda on German television. These experiences strengthened his belief in the power of culture to unite people in contexts of challenge and conflict. Shortly after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, he launched a project to further cultural exchange between German students and Ukrainian refugees.

David earned a Bachelor’s degree in piano at the Mozarteum with Pietro De Maria. Simultaneously, he studied philosophy in Munich and Oxford and graduated as top student in both subjects. Under the tutelage of piano pedagogue Pascal Nemirovski, he has been perfecting his interdisciplinary approach to musical interpretation. He has attended masterclasses with Rena Shereshevskaya, Antti Siirala, and Michel Béroff. Currently, David is pursuing an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, generously supported by a Leverhulme Arts Scholarship.
